MD Theatre Guide
Sue Tilberry’s full review of our Summer 2024 Youth Show is a wonderful read and a testament to the cast and entire production crew. Ms. Tilberry started with this:
“The rigors of the dance numbers and the ear worm, toe-tapping music make the play engrossing from start to finish, but difficult to stage. The Talent Machine Company’s ‘Oklahoma!’ has taken on this challenge with its production for younger performers (14 years old and younger).
Ms. Tilberry complimented leads Gabriella Daniel and Liam Cool as Laurie and Curly respectively, as well as other members of the cast:
“As the two leads, Daniel and Cool are excellent. Daniel’s soprano is clear and faultless, and she surprises us with her incredible range. Cool starts the show a capella and, from there, is the master of his musical numbers.
The well-chosen cast makes the various story lines rich and fun. Ado Annie (Jasmine Dominguez-Taco) is perfectly ditzy and confused as she tries to keep pace with her raging hormones. Ado Annie’s love interest at the moment, the traveling peddler Ali Hakim·(Cameron Keller), is a great conman as he flirts and compliments women to get them to buy his wares, but he is not quite slippery enough to stay out of trouble, or wedlock. Aunt Eller (Kennedy Washington) is fun-loving, wise, and wise-cracking, and Washington fills her shoes well.
Ado Annie’s other love interest, Will Parker (Mac Brabazon), is a delight to watch as he gracefully jumps and whirls about the stage, leading dance number after dance number. His obvious joy at performing is infectious. Caleb Matson is scarily convincing as Judd Fry. He is so good at being creepy that it would not surprise if his singing voice matched his character—but his voice is sonorous and beautiful.”
DIRECTORS: The cast of children ages 7 to 14 were led by Executive Director Lea Capps, Director Lucas White, Music Director Cyndi Wallman and Choreographers Morgan Gingerich and Katie Peacock.
