In the Spotlight

We are profoundly grateful for all of the donors and volunteers who make The Talent Machine experience possible for kids and create a family environment that is safe, inclusive and confidence-building. Each month, we spotlight members of this family who are making a difference every day.
October 2026 ~ The Abbotts
For Karin and Bob Abbott and their daughters, Sydney and Lily, Talent Machine has been much more than a place to perform. It has been a place to grow, build lifelong friendships, learn the value of hard work, and become part of the TMC family.
This year, Karin and Bob played an especially important role in helping TMC find a new home for its Holiday Spectacular at Arundel High School, where they both work. Bob directs the choir and guitar ensemble and leads the technical theater team, while Karin directs the theater program.
Their support reflects a long history with TMC. The 2026 Holiday Spectacular will mark Lily’s 24th TMC production, including her work as a mentor with The Penguin Project. Karin has volunteered in countless roles, from “Elf Wrangler” to box office and costumes. We recently asked her to share their family’s TMC journey.
It All Started With a Six-Year-Old
Lily’s story began when she turned six and decided to audition for the holiday show, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Sydney. But when Sydney couldn’t audition because of a school scheduling conflict, Lily was terrified to go alone..

“She was refusing to do it without Sydney – she was so, so scared!” Karin recalls.
Sydney offered to accompany her little sister into the audition, even knowing she wouldn’t be cast. The reassurance worked: Lily earned a role in her first holiday show and never looked back!
From “Elf Wrangler” to TMC Family
As Lily became more involved, Karin did, too. “I started off as a house helper and ‘Elf Wrangler,’” she says. “I then started doing box office and lots and lots of costumes!”
For Karin, one of TMC’s greatest gifts has been sharing the experience with her daughter—and building lasting relationships along the way. “The amazing friends that we have made with this shared experience have become like family,” she says. “Having a group of people that understand, appreciate and support each other and the dreams that they possess is very special.”
And the memories? There are “Soooo many” to choose from! One unforgettable experience was TMC’s time at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds during the pandemic, including “taking cover from the storms in the metal barns!”
More Than a Show
Karin believes TMC helps young people develop skills that last far beyond the stage. “The work ethic that is instilled in them is second to none,” she says. “Excellence is what is expected and always being strived for.”
She also values the collaboration that makes theater possible: “Depending on and collaborating with others to do something great and the feeling of that greatness is the reward.”
The Abbotts bring their own deep performing arts experience to that mission. Both hold degrees in music education. Bob has performed professionally as a bassist in the Baltimore/Washington area for 26 years, while Karin has directed children’s theater throughout Anne Arundel County for 26 years.
And Karin’s favorite TMC show? That’s a tough choice—but Young Frankenstein gets the honor!
Thank you, Karin, Bob, Lily and Sydney, for being such an important part of the Talent Machine family!
